๐ŸŽผ Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni

Sargam is the Indian equivalent of Do Re Mi. In Hindustani music, Sa (เคทเคกเฅเคœ) is the tonic โ€” the root note. On a C harmonica, Sa = C. The seven swaras (notes) repeat across three saptaks (octaves).

โ™ญ Komal & โ™ฏ Tivra

  • Komal Re (C#/Dโ™ญ)
  • Komal Ga (D#/Eโ™ญ)
  • Komal Dha (G#/Aโ™ญ)
  • Komal Ni (A#/Bโ™ญ)
  • Tivra Ma (F#/Gโ™ญ) โ€” only one

Sa and Pa are achala โ€” they never change.

๐ŸŽต Three Saptaks

Mandra Saptak โ€” lower octave, prefix dot (.Sa)
Madhya Saptak โ€” middle octave, plain (Sa)
Taar Saptak โ€” upper octave, suffix prime (Sa')
Ati Taar โ€” very high (Sa'')

Most ragas use notes from Madhya + Taar saptak.
